Game of the Week

Sure, there are 32 games this weekend. But only one can be named Game of the Week. Since my boys bowed out last week against East St. Louis, they obviously can no longer can be my choice. But there are plenty of other area teams that I can root for. But will I?

Let's start it off.

Can [3]Loyola stymie the always surprising [10]Mount Carmel?

Can high rolling [12]St. Charles North upset the unbeaten [1]Glenbard West?

Will [3]Crete-Monee keep the dream alive as they travel to [2]Providence?

Can [5]De La Salle keep the city alive by beating [1]Cary-Grove?

Will Dan Sharp's boys live up to the legacy that he has has built when
[2]Washington visits Memorial Stadium to battle [6]Joliet Catholic?

All great games to catch, but The Game of the Week will be between the two unbeatens down in 3A:

[2]Wilmington goes to pay a visit to [1]Illini West.

How Round 2 will go down

That guy over there thinks that that team will win this weekend. Him over there, he feels there is no chance of his team losing Saturday afternoon. She thinks that her son will lead his team back home with the big "W" light at the school shining brightly. I, however, have no clue who will continue on after this weekend to play more fall ball. Nor do I know which teams players will be practicing their jump shots or lacing up their wrestling shoes. The following means absolutely nothing to anybody but me. I might be right, still, I most likely, will be wrong on the grand scale of things. Whatever the case may turn out to be, lets have another great weekend of high school football, boys.

Week 9 is OVA!!!!

Week 9, the final week of the regular season is complete. Well, at least for the next 2 hours it's complete anyway. In two hours, the IHSA will decide who is playing who, what class those games will be in and where they will be played.

Congrats to all players, coaches and fans for a great regualr season. Now, let's get these playoffs started.

And to round off the regular season game predictions of this weekend:

I chose...

Providence 37, Mount Carmel 35
Naperville Central 28, Glenbard North 14
Loyola 21, St. Rita 10
Stevenson 53, Warren 21 and
Minooka 45, Plainfield Central 24

...and the games ended like...

Providence winning 17-14
Glenbard North winning 27-14
Loyola winning 17-7
Stevenson winning 26-14 and
Minooka 21-13

...not too bad (4-1) for a guy who doesn't know too much.

Game of the Week

The end of the regular season is this weekend. A wonderful year of great high school football is ending. Well, for some teams it is ending. The 2nd season starts this Saturday with the playoff pairings. And then it's all fair game, no holds barred, smash mouth football. Sorry, getting ahead of myself. We still need to finish Week 9.

Let's see, who do we have knocking heads this weekend that is worthy of the Game of the Week Title?

Well, (15)Mount Carmel is heading South to battle (5)Providence in New Lenox Friday night. If the games I've witnessed these two schools play against each other means anything to you, which it probably doesn't, this should shape up to be a great game.

But then there's (17)Glenbard North going to visit (10)Naperville Central to try and start their weekend off right.

And (6)St. Rita knocks heads with (7)Loyola that everybody and their mother is going to be claiming as their Game of the Week because they are both so highly ranked. Blah. Blah. And. Blah.

I'm going with (16)Stevenson stopping by the house of higher ranked (13)Warren for a visit and again moving up the list of ranked teams after their win.

My Picks:

Providence 37, Mount Carmel 35
Naperville Central 28, Glenbard North 14
Loyola 21, St. Rita 10
Stevenson 53, Warren 21

and of course...

Minooka 45, Plainfield Central 24

p.s.

Hey Indians, you remember that Plainfield Central knocked your heads around last year 53-15 to lock up the conference championship, right? Well, you win this one, the championship's yours. Well, at least a share of it depending on what Oswego does. Unless, of course, since you smoked them last week, the conference board memebers will just give it to you. Anyway, I'm pretty sure that Cookie's wants to serve Wildcat this weekend as a special, so bring 'em the meat.

p.s.s. Unless some unthinkalbe phenomenon goes down Friday afternoon, the Steelmen of Joliet or the Homewood-Flossmoor Vikings will pick up their first win of the season. Not too bad, I suppose. Practice all summer to get ready for the season, have your butt handed to you each of the eight times you took the field and then, finally, the last game of the season, you pull your first "W". Whoever wins, it'll be a low scorer: H-f is averaging 8.6 points a game, while Joliet, a lowly 6. Good luck fellas.

Area Leaders From Week 8

These following fellas are the Area Leaders From Week 8 with two state records and one national record being set at new heights.

QB:

1. Brandon Pechloff, Montini: 264 yds, 4 tds
2. Mike Perish, Marist (6-2): 249 yds, 4 tds
3. Tommy Rees, Lake Forest (3-5): 245 yds, td
4. Robert Galik, St. Rita (7-1): 234 yds, 2 tds
5. Jimmy Garoppolo, Rolling Meadows (5-2): 219 yds, 2 tds; 120 yds rushing, td

RB:

1. Matt Perez, Maine South (8-0): 352 yards, 4 td
2. Jalen Williams, Larkin (6-2): 248 yards, 3 tds
3. Josh Ferguson, Joliet Catholic (6-2): 237 yards, td
4. Rashaan Fox , Mather (6-2): 231 yds, 3 tds
5. Brock Douglas, Plainfield Central (4-4): 230 yards, 2 tds

WR:

1. Jahliel Thurman, Lindblom (4-4): 175 yards, 4 tds
2. Davonte Pendleton, Harlan (6-2): 175 yards, 2 tds
3. Mark McDonagh, Riverside-Brookfield (5-3): 159 yards
4. AJ Smith, North Lawndale (4-4): 155 yards
5. Ryley Bailey, Kaneland (5-3): 148 yards, td

DEFENSE:

1. Christopher Winston, Perspectives (6-2): 18 tackles, 13 sacks, 3 forced fumbles
2. Corey Thomas, Lindblom (4-4): 10 tackles, 2 sacks
3. Rashaan Fox, Mather (6-2): 10 tackles
4. Nick Mandich, Grayslake Central (?-?): 9 tackles, forced fumble
5. Ellis Gary, Perspectives (6-2): 8 tackles, 3 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries, 1 td

Before yesterday, two high school players were tied for the lead for most sacks recorded in a single game with six; Aaron Marshall of Lane did it twice in the '92 campaign and Jon Kowalshyen of Leyden did it against Willowbrook in '97.

But yesterday, October 17, 2009, Christopher Winston of Perspectives racked up a mind blowing 13 sacks. He finished the game with 18 total tackles. If you do the math, 72.2% of his tackles were sacks.

And on the other side of the ball, Riverside-Brookfield's Mark McDonagh set new state and national records for receptions in a season by ending the day with catch 144 on the year. He topped the record set by Lexington's Eric Schuler (130) in 2006.

McDonagh already has set the state record for receptions in a single game earlier this season when he pulled in 20 catches in the 64-26 blowout of Robeson in Week 3.

Game of the Week

So, it's Week 8 and it's pretty much determined who it is that will be playing in the playoffs at the end of the month. What class these teams will actually land is yet to be determined, but, that never really has mattered to me. If a team is good enough to get to the dance, it doesn't matter who they're dancing with, all they need to do is dance. If you didn't pick up on it, the dance is the playoffs.

This coming weekend will be big, with explosive game after explosive game.

Somebody's door to a beautiful, undefeated season will be closed this weekend when
(22)Crystal Lake South goes to (19)Cary-Grove Friday night to battle at 7:15.

(9)Glenbard North plays host and hopes to derail (3)WW South Friday night at 7:30.

Two of the L-W schools will do the dance Friday as well as (25)L-W Central hosts (10)L-W East at 7 o'clock.

Dan Sharp's boys at (13)Joliet Catholic go to (21)Marian Catholic to try and better their playoff spot.

And a newby to Steve Tucker's Top 25, (20)Glenbrook South will try to upset (1)Maine South Saturday at 1:30 in the afternoon.

But then there is the game that matters most to me, and since this is my blog, I can admit this game to the list; Minooka at Oswego, 7 p.m. Friday.

With a win, 5-2 Minooka will lock up a spot in the dance. With a loss, they'll have to really step it up for their season ender. Oswego, also 5-2, is sitting in the same boat as the Indians. If the Panthers win, they're in, with a loss, they've got to step it up as well.

Predictions:

Cary-Grove 28, Crystal Lake South 26
Glenbard North 37, WW South 21
L-W East 39, L-W Central 12
Joliet Catholic 56, Marian Catholic 38
Maine South 35, Glenbrook South 32
Minooka 49, Oswego 37

State Records

It's a pretty big deal when a player on your team sets a new state record. It's an even bigger deal when two players on the same team set new state records for two differenet accomplishments.

Billy VanderMerkt of Riverside-Brookfield (2-3) completed his 646th career completition to set the new state record.

In route to setting this record, VanderMerkt hooked up with Mark McDonagh 25 times.

McDonagh broke his own state record with his 25th reception of the game.

This guy was a little Hester-ish.

Devon Hester. Might have just been the best return man in NFL history if he wouldn't have decided to run side to side when he caught the ball. The year the Bears went to the Super Bowl, he didn't want to run side to side. He just ran the damn thing to the endzone. Not so much anymore. But this following fella, well, he knew to run North and South, not East to West this weekend.

Peter Houlihan of Providence (4-1) returned a punt 80-yards for a touchdown and he also returned a kickoff 90-yards for another score.

Nice job Pete. Keep it up.

Game of the Week

The 2009 high school football season is well under way and after a few setbacks--the sideline death of Curie's Quaashi Chandler and the game ending brawl between North Chicago and Simeon--things are as normal as one could hope for.

A big congrats to head coach Bert Kooi and his boys in Minooka for their 21-14 victory over one time Minooka head coach Mike Briscoe and his team at Plainfield South.

With that big win, maybe the attention of some has been caught and the Indians might sneak into a Top 25 sometime soon. But they'll have to keep at it. Friday night will determine if they can stay at it when they go to Oswego East, even though East hasn't won a game yet this season and has only scored twenty points this year, while allowing 32+ in each of its games.

Prediction:

Minooka 42, Oswego East 7--Minooka QB Mitch Brozovich runs for 117 yds and 2 scores while collecting 247 yards and a touchdown through the air.

IHSA says they can play

The IHSA has removed the "must forfeit" tag it placed on the North Chicago football program September 10th after a fight broke out against Simeon on September 4th. A fight that I might add, included both players and fans, on the field, with several minutes left in the 1st quarter, with Simeon leading the way 21-0.

Though the North Chicago program, varsity to freshman, has been given the nod to play, seven of the North Chicago players involved in the brawl will still be suspended.

North Chicago (0-3) will battle at Zion-Benton (0-3) at 7:30 p.m. Friday. This game, no matter the circumstances, is always a fierce fight. Maybe even one of the biggest rivalries in the state. I don't even want to think about the pent up tensions of players from both teams having to deal with not yet winning a game. It might get nasty. But, it might also show that the boys at North Chicago aren't as remedial as many think.

My Pick: North Chicago 28, Z-B 13

Game of the Week

After two weeks of football, there has been so much action to watch and read about. Be it from Lake Forest's Tommy Rees turning in that 526 yd. passing performance last week, the death of Curie player Quaashi A. Chandler or the ridiculous fights at the Simeon vs. North Chicago and the Niles West vs. Niles North games.

But no matter what we are feeling as humans, be it happiness or pain, we have to move on.

And tonight, everybody will be trying to do that.

There is much talk that the Game of the Week will be played between (15) Joliet Catholic and (19) Nazareth or (14) Providence and (17) Loyola. Can JCA turn around after the loss to the Celtics last week? Will the Celtics keep their motors running against Loyola this week? It doesn't matter. The Game of the Week will be played between (6) Hinsdale Central at (8) Glenbard West.

Both schools have great QB's in John Whitelaw (Hinsdale Central) and Tyler Warden so watch for both to have big yards via land and air.

Pick: Glenbard West 24, Hinsdale Central 22

North Chicago brawl hands "W" to Vernon Hills

North Chicago and Simeon players and fans duked it out for close to 15 minutes last weekend with under six minutes remaining in the first quarter. The fight may have been a result of the score; Simeon 21, North Chicago 0.

Perhaps those involved from North Chicago were upset or embarrassed by the score. Or they might have been feeling poorly about the way their season has been going. Maybe the were ashamed by being outscored 63-6 so far this season. And remember, that total, 63, could have and would have been much higher if this game continued.

The IHSA has determined that all levels of North Chicago football must forfeit this weekends games. They are, however, allowed to keep practicing. While the team practices, eight members of the team will not. Six players have been suspended for one game, two players for two.

Rest now, Quaashi A. Chandler.

Friday night, a young man was taken from each of us on the sidelines in Bolingbrook.

Quaashi Chandler, running back/defensive back for Curie, collapsed with 41 seconds left in the game and was given immediate emergency attention before being taken to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital. And as his teammates and opponents for the evening shook hands after the game, Chandler died at the hospital.

What a horrible thing to witness. A young man with his entire life to live, playing a game that he presumably loved, with his best friends and he is taken away for all to witness.

My heart and prayers are with this young mans family and friends.

Proviso West's Prater opts for USC

Proviso West's senior wide receiver Mike Prater has made his selection on where he will be continuing his education and NFL drive this week: 11-time National Champion USC.

The 6'4 soon to be Trojan, who will graduate early from Proviso West and enroll early enough to register for spring football on the West coast, turned down offers from an estimated 40 schools including Illinois, Notre Dame, Stanford, Tennessee and Oklahoma.

Prater is ranked as the #1 receiver in the state of Illinois and #2 in the nation by Rivals.com

Game of the Week

This was a tough decesion to make with Joliet Catholic cruising East down Rt. 30 to play against Providence in the "Two Power House Football Programs From The Joliet Area Bowl" this Friday, considering the two schools have stockpiled 22 state titles between them, but The Game of the Week will be played at Maine South as the #2 Hawks play host to #1 WW South at 7:30. Get there early people, it's going to be tough finding a seat.

WEEK 1 IS OVA!!!

So, the first week of high school football is complete and for the most part, the games played out pretty much as many believed they would. But there were a few early season upsets. But upsets make you stronger.

A very big congrats to the Robeson defense, who allowed just 13 yards of offense during their 40-6 man handling of Julian. Dion Grace led the attack with eight tackles and three sacks while freshman Devaughn Gaultney picked up a sack and a fumble recovery. The Robeson "D" also stopped the Julian "O" 15 times behind the line of scrimmage.

In Robbie Gould like fashion, Joliet Catholic kicker Robbie Cranmer kicked a 35-yarder that split the uprights, with no clicks left on the clock, to win the game against Carmel 19-16. Congrats for not loosing your cool like I would have, Robbie, and missed the ball as I tried to kick it.

And to wrap it up, another congrats goes to the boys over at Maine East who have finally ended that horrible 39-game loosing streak they've been riding since 2004 by beating Schurz 19-9. Their last win, 22-0, came October 3, 2004 against Niles North. Feels real nice doesn't it boys?
