Record Setter

Senior year of my high school football career - if it can be called that - I lined up on the O Line as the left tight end. We were a running team, only throwing the ball to running backs who had scampered out the the left or right flank for a screen pass. Something quarterback Will Totten, of McKenzie High School (Ore.), did not do.

What Totten did do, however, was set a new football record. I say new football record because it has never been done on any level before he did it. So what did he do?

Totten threw for 553 yards with 11 touchdowns. He also added 117 on the ground with a score. Add it all together and it's a 670 yard, 12 touchdown day for the kid.

Though the division Totten and his teammates play in is of the 8-man team variety, allowing for more scoring - the final score was McKenzie 88, Lowell (Ore.) 80 - it's still a pretty impressive feat.

A new meaning for 'Going Long'.

About 10-years ago, the first year I was living in Chicago, I went back to my hometown to watch a second round playoff game between Providence Catholic and Minooka High School. Two things I can remember from that game: 1) Minooka won, which was a pretty big deal considering the area I grew up. It was like a breeding ground for high school football teams where I grew up . Providence and all their state championships, was 10 minutes down the road from Joliet Catholic and all their trophies, and we all know what the Hilltoppers are made of. Morris, and all their championships, was 10 minutes from Minooka, and we all know who the Redskins are. Back then, either one or two of the three (Providence, Joliet Catholic or Morris) would find their way to winning the state championship. Minooka, in 2002, or maybe it was a '03 or '04, gave it a hell of a run that year, but fell short in the game before Turkey Day Weekend. And 2) the kicker for Providence was killing field goals before the start of the game from the 45 yard line. That's a 55-yard field goal for those who can't do the math.

But this kid out in Carson, Nevada, went and kicked it further than the graduated Celtic I watched the night of the game. Austin Pacheco, of Carson High School, kicked a 64-yard field goal with 27 ticks left on the clock to lead his team to victory over Bishop Manogue (Nev.) High School.

The NFL record, set earlier this season, is 63-yards, held by Sebastian Janikowski of the Raiders.

College recruiters need to start lining up now.

You think you had a good game?

If you played a game this season and threw for 260 yards with 4 touchdowns, or wrapped up 15 solo tackles, or rushed for 200 yards, or kicked 5 field goals. you'd say you had a pretty nice game. Jake Maulhardt would laugh in your face. (Maybe. I don't know the kid so I can't truly say he would do that. He might be the nicest guy on the planet for all I know.)

You see, Maulhardt, a wide receiver from Camarillo (Cali.) High School, might laugh because of the happenings last week when his team played Canyon (Cali.) High. Canyon won the game 52-28, but that isn't the story.

The story, dear friend, is what Maulhardt accomplished in the defeat. He set a new California State Record by pulling in 28 receptions and ranks 3rd, according to MaxPreps, on the single game National record. His 28 grabs netted him 347 total yards and three touchdowns.

Furthermore, the 6'7 Maulhardt did it all while in double and triple coverage.

See original story after the jump.

The Big Ones

At long last, it's here; HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL SEASON!

Hope you all enjoyed your summer break, but it's time to put the beach blankets and sun screen away and buckle the helmets to knock some heads. Week 1 has some exciting match-ups that will change up the rankings for teams in the Top 10. Away we go.

Tomorrow afternoon, (4)Mount Carmel will try to stop (6)Simeon in the Bears Den, er, Soldiers Field at 2:30. Last season both of these teams made valiant runs for state titles. This year, they both look to do it again. Will Caravan QB Robert Gregory out toss the Simeon D led by two-way star Brandon Greer or will Mount Carmel lose the opener like they did last year against the same team?

Tomorrow night, 7:30, Memorial Stadium, Joliet, Illinois, (12)Joliet Catholic plays host to (7)Carmel and the top seeding for the East Suburban Catholic. Both teams have explosive, 3-man back fields who promise heavy ground attacks from both squads. But will it be Andy Bitto's Corsair's or Dan Sharp's Hilltopper's who come away with the win?

And of course, (16)Minooka travels West down Old Route 6 Friday night to battle long time nemesis Morris. Do Bert Kooi;s Indians have it in them for the upcoming battle with Alan Thorson's Redskins? These two programs, when put on a football field against each other, no matter either skill level, turn this game into a blood fight, er, a death match. Games between the Bears and the Packers for the NFC Championship are like kittens playing with puppies compared to these games. Will this game hold the hatred for ones opponent the games between these squads over the last 40 years has held? Will these two teams come to battle with the "Kill or be Killed" attitude all of Grundy County is hoping they bring? We can only hope so.

Gearing up for 2011

Hello IHSA footballers, coaches and fans...if there are any of you still here.

The 2011 season is sneaking up on us and Running It In For Two is kinda excited. Manly because I'm bored and miss high school football games.

Keep on the lookout for the schedules I will be posting over the next couple of days for every team from 8A to 3A.

See ya later.
