When somebody doesn't follow rules in high school, and they are caught by an authoritative figure, they are usually sent to the dean for a short reprimanding. Or the authoritative figure skips the dean and writes the rule breaker a pass to detention at the end of the day. But a detention, however, wasn't enough punishment for Mt. Carmel athletic director/head football coach Frank Lenti, according to IHSA director Marty Hickman.
The rule that Lenti or Principal Rev. Carl Markelz broke was making contact with about 400 possible future students/players, by sending marketing letters that invited the future students to a playoff football game, which breaks a recruiting bylaw.
Mt. Carmel has cooperated with the IHSA on the matter and has developed a plan to make sure this type of activity never happens again.
Lenti has coached for just over 2 1/2 decades and has won nine of the 13 state championship games his teams have played in.
