Mt. Carmel loses coach for first 2

When somebody doesn't follow rules in high school, and they are caught by an authoritative figure, they are usually sent to the dean for a short reprimanding. Or the authoritative figure skips the dean and writes the rule breaker a pass to detention at the end of the day. But a detention, however, wasn't enough punishment for Mt. Carmel athletic director/head football coach Frank Lenti, according to IHSA director Marty Hickman.

The rule that Lenti or Principal Rev. Carl Markelz broke was making contact with about 400 possible future students/players, by sending marketing letters that invited the future students to a playoff football game, which breaks a recruiting bylaw.

Mt. Carmel has cooperated with the IHSA on the matter and has developed a plan to make sure this type of activity never happens again.

Lenti has coached for just over 2 1/2 decades and has won nine of the 13 state championship games his teams have played in.

Just Say No To Drugs

The scandals of athletes who use Performance Enhancing Drugs (PED's) fill the pages of newspapers and magazines on a pretty regular basis. It might have been major league ball bashers Sammy Sosa and Mark McGuire using a little something extra to excite the nation in that magnificent home run chase a few years back. Or maybe it was Brian Bosworth way back in the day poping pills to keep that tough guy persona he had going for him. And hell, it might have even been Kyle Petty of NASCAR fame using something to help him win a race. (But we, well, some of us anyway, know that nothing could help him win a race.)

Because the youth of this country hold athletes so high and most dream to someday be in the majors of their sport of choice, perhaps the professional use of PED's has trickled down to the youngsters.

And if it has, it won't be tolerable any longer. Well, in Illinois anyway.

Illinois is one of the four states to allow student athletes to be tested for PED's. Something that fans of any level of competition should be thankful for.

Welcome to Running It In For Two

Because I love high school football and have lost my job at the Chicago Sun-Times for whatever reason they have decided, this here little blog will be, well, the scores, some highlights, maybe an interview or two of coaches/players/fans/cheerleaders over the entire season. If I still like doing this stuff come November, it'll be up and going again in 2010. If you have something to send me about your personal stats, team stats yadda-yadda-yadda, shoot me an e-mail.

Thanks .
